Down in the Dumps

When I woke up this morning, I didn’t feel like getting up right away. So I just stayed there in bed and started thinking. I started thinking about stuff from last year, last month, last week, yesterday, and what might and might not happen today. I got down in the dumps real quick over some legitimate dump-inducing stuff. I felt so down, that I started focusing on how down I was going to be tomorrow because of how down I would be today, because of stuff from yesterday, last week, last month and last year.

After depressing myself for nearly an hour, I decided I didn’t like being down in the dumps before my feet hit the floor. I could have opened one of the inspirational books I wrote, specifically “Talk to God with Affirmations of Faith,” and selected one of the pages of affirmations that dealt with my feelings. But I didn’t feel like rolling over and reaching for it because I was in the dumps.

After a few more minutes, I looked up at the ceiling and finally called on Jesus. I asked out loud “Jesus what do you think about my dumpy day?” 1Corinthians 1:27 says--But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. And that is just what He did in response to my question. Suddenly I heard the Oldies songs by the Four Tops “I’ll Be There.” Without telling my age, I know the lyrics to the song very, very well and I started singing them softly. And as I did, I felt the onset of depression drift away as the tears rolled down my face. I was singing, crying and laughing at the same time as I rolled out of bed and headed for the shower. Synopsis of today is: The joy of the Lord is my strength. To follow are the lyrics to the song “I’ll Be There.” In my heart it was no longer the Four Tops, but my Lord and Father instead telling me what I needed to hear to get out of the dumps and stay on course.

I’LL BE THERE

Now if you feel that you can't go on,

Because all of your hope is gone,

And your life is filled with much confusion,

Until happiness is just an illusion,

And your world around is crumbling down, darlin',

Reach out, Come on girl reach on out for me,

Reach out, Reach out for me,

I'll be there with a love that will shelter you,

I'll be there with a love that will see you through,

When you feel lost and about to give up,

Cause your life just ain't good enough,

And you feel the world has grown cold,

And you’re drifting out all on your own,

And you need a hand to hold, darlin'

Reach out, Come on girl reach out for me,

Reach out, Reach out for me,

Hah, I'll be there to love and comfort you,

And I'll be there to cherish and care for you,

I'll be there to always see you through,

I'll be there to love and comfort you,

I can tell the way you hang your head,

You’re not in love now, now your afraid,

And through the tears you look around,

But there's no peace of mind to be found,

I know what you’re thinking,

You're alone now, no love of your own, but darling,

Reach out, Come on girl reach out for me,

Reach out.......... just look over your shoulder,

I'll be there to give you all the love you need,

And I'll be there you can always depend on me,

I'll be there to always see you through,

I'll be there to love and comfort you
